cat behavior

A lot of people think that cats work on their own agenda, not paying much attention to their owner – provided they have clean litter, food, and water. Cats can behave in odd manners at times, which can easily confuse their owners and make it really hard to determine what the cat wants. As much as cat behavior can be confusing, there are some ways that you can solve common cat behavior mysteries.

A common behavior that almost all cats do is push their heads into any type of object that will allow them to do it. You’ve probably seen your cat do this before, probably against table legs, TV stands, or another object. This can be noticed more when you have other people who own animals or those with allergies over at your house. When a cat notices this, he will rub his head against the person. In doing so, he will put a touch of saliva on the individual. In a cat’s mind, he owns what he puts his saliva on.

By putting his saliva on something, that object or person will have a familiar scent. Although this can be very annoying, you have to understand that other people in your home are seen as odd or weird to your cat. When a cat does this, he is simply trying to make the visitor belong. When he brushes up against them and puts his saliva on them, he is trying to put his scent on them – which in his mind will mean that they belong in his territory.

Even though marking someone or something with saliva is beneficial to the cat, saliva is one of the most common forms of pet allergies. When someone wipes the saliva off of them, the scent will be gone and the cat will go back and attempt to do it again. Even though it may appear that cats target those with allergies, cats are actually just trying to make the visitor belong at the house. If the guest simply cannot take the saliva, allow the cat to rub himself on their pants leg a few times. Normally, this is all takes for a cat to leave the person alone.

Those of you who an indoor cat should expect the cat to spend quite a bit of time lying near windows. During this time, you may hear your cat make very strange noises or weird movements. You shouldn’t fear though, as he is simply acting out his hunting instincts. Whether it’s another cat or object outside moving about, the cat will see it and simply go into his native hunting instinct.

As most already know, cats love to play. They love to played with, especially with toys. They will pounce on things on occasion, which should always be expected. If you try to prevent this type of behavior, your cat will take a very negative approach and you’ll end up with a lot of broken things in your home. You can always play with your cat using a string, as he will love to chase the string around the room.

The longer you own your cat, the more odd behavior you’ll see him exhibit. Cats behave in strange ways, although they always have a reason for behaving the way they do. If you can understand why your cat behaves like he does, you’ll have no problems keeping him healthy and happy. If you simply pay attention to your cat and the way he behaves at times – you’ll be able to understand him better than ever before.

pet bird

Keeping a bird as a pet can be interesting and rewarding, especially if your bird is from the parrot family that can live for many years. These birds can be easily tamed and trained to perform tricks or to talk and sing with amazing clarity. A tamed pet parrot can be your life-long companion and keep you company. Many pet parrot owners find joy training their birds to talk, and unlike your dog or cat, it can be very satisfying when your bird wishes you ‘good morning’.

But before you try to train your bird to talk, it is necessary to win its confidence first. This would be having your bird to get used to your presence and the presence of the all the people living with you in the house. It would be easier to tame a bird if it is two to six months old. Anything older than that would require a lot of patience on your part. Full-grown parrots can bite hard and injure you if you are not careful. Try not to make sudden moves that surprises your bird or it will defend itself through natural instincts.

Pet your bird by gently scratching its head for it to get used to you. Offer food from the other hand, such as nuts, celery, corn, raisin, and grapes. You should also offer your bird milk or fruit juice from a small cup. Don’t give your bird leftovers from your lunch or dinner, or junk food like burger meat, hotdog or high calorie cakes.

Use hunger as leverage when taming your bird. This method is widely used in bird parks around the world. When your bird has not been fed for a couple of hours, place the food on a dish near you and led the bird come to you for feeding. The bird would feel nervous at first, but once it gets used to this, it would be natural for the bird to come to you with confidence

If your bird is quite wild when you first purchased it, you could place the cage next to you when you go about doing your personal things such as reading, watching tv or writing. It would just be a matter of time before your bird get used to having your presence around. If your bird is big, you might want to rough around with it such as scratching its head and back. Protect yourself with gloves or a towel at first until it eventually recognizes you as its master. Soon your bird will expect this kind of attention from people it is familiar with.

You would need to do a complete examination of your bird at least once a month and look out for abnormalities such as ingrown feather or toenails or a beak that needs trimming. Look out also for possible liver trouble in the form of swollen or dark abdomen. Wash the legs with warm water to get rid of encrusted droppings and apply vaseline to soften the scales and kill scale lice.

With patience, you will have a great companion that keeps you company for years to come.

pet adoption

Pets have become more than just animals.  They have become a part of the family.  As family members, you want to give them the best care possible.  However, just like people, caring for pets can be quite expensive.

The expense has become a hindrance to many people considering a pet.  If you’d really like to have a pet or keep the one you have, consider these tips on saving money on your pets.

Pet Choice

If you don’t have a pet yet, carefully consider the type of pet you will have.  A pet cannot and should not be discarded when it becomes inconvenient.  This makes the choice of pet extremely important.

Choose a pet you can care for properly in your current environment.  Choose a pet you know you’ll be able to afford the upkeep.  Don’t buy a high end dog when you can’t meet its special requirements.

If you’ve decided on a pet already, decide how and where you’re going to get your pet from.  Think of animal rescue centers and shelters.  You may not even have to pay for the pet.  Adopt your friends’ pet if they can’t care for their pet anymore.  If you buy your pet from a store or breeder, expect to pay more.

If you’re looking to own a particular breed, research the breed first.  You need to know what to expect, what weaknesses and illnesses are common.  In the event that your pet becomes ill, you already know what to expect and how much to spend.

Veterinarian

Choose a vet wisely.  Find one near your area so you don’t have to travel far.  The more expensive vets with flashy offices don’t necessarily mean that they’re better or that they will be able to care more for your beloved pet.  A good veterinarian doesn’t have to be expensive or own a fancy office.

If a school of veterinary medicine is in or near your area, upper level students may be able to help you with common ailments and concerns.

Food

Check the labels

Many expensive and less costly brands share the same ingredients.  Why pay more when you can have the same at less the price?

Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk can save you more money in the long run.  You won’t have to make frequent trips to the store; this saves you gas, time and effort.  In many cases, shops will deliver for free to your home if you purchase in bulk.

Avoid sugar, Give chews

Sugary foods can lead to dental problems for your pet.  Avoid the dental costs by giving your pet non-sugary foods and hard, dry chews.

Don’t overfeed, exercise

Overfeeding is bad for your pet.  This can lead to expensive health problems.  Feed your pet as required.  Exercise regularly.  Taking along your pet for a walk or jog is a great way for both of you to get some exercise.

Groom at home

Grooming can become very expensive.  Why not groom your pet at home?  Buy nail clippers, brushes and shampoo.  Grooming your pet yourself will also give you precious bonding time.

Vaccinate

Prevent diseases common among pets through vaccinations.  The out of pocket expense may seem a bit much at first but is well worth the price in the long run.  Your pet will be healthier and happier.  You avoid spending on expensive treatments.

You should also get heartworm protection for your dog if you have one.

Prevent Accidents

If your pet is outdoors, make sure that there is an enclosure.  This will protect your pet from within and without.  Stray animals won’t be able to get to your pet and your pet won’t be able to get to stray animals.  This lessens the possibility of injury and or death.

An enclosure will also prevent your pet from getting into your neighbor’s property.  You won’t have to pay for repairs or damages that your precious pet may cause.

Spay/Neuter

If you don’t want any additions to your pet family, make sure that your pet is either spayed or neutered.  This will save you a lot of emotional and financial stress.

Having a pet is like having a child.  Before taking any step towards pet ownership, ask yourself if you are ready to step up to the plate and be a responsible pet owner.  Be forewarned though, the joys and rewards of having a pet can make any expense seem worthwhile.  So hold on to those purse strings when you need to.

cat toy

“My cat is awake all night, full of energy and is stopping me from getting any sleep. It’s driving me nuts!

Most cats spend a good part of their daylight hours sleeping, they like nothing better than finding a warm spot and enjoying a little snooze.

The trouble is that some cats are wide-awake when night falls and are full of vim and vigor, if your cat is one that could mean broken sleep or even entirely sleepless nights for you. And that’s no joke, you need your sleep so you can be bright eyed and bushy tailed for work in the morning. You are embarrassed about being constantly bleary eyed and yawning at your desk!

So, are you sharing your home with an evil feline, a cat that has a secret agenda to torment you with sleep deprivation? No, it’s not really your cat’s fault. In their natural state cats are nocturnal hunters, they stalk their prey at night. Centuries ago cats ventured into human settlements because where there was humans there were rodents. This arrangement was good for both parties, good hunting for the cats and the humans had the rodent problem solved for them.

Years later the rodent problem was not so acute for humans but many found that they enjoyed the company of cats. Cats began to be kept as pets and the humans fed their feline pets so there was no need for them to hunt for their food. But the hunting instinct remains with the cats to this day . . . and so does the nocturnal instinct.

“OK, cats are naturally active at night but I really need my sleep. What can I do?”

This problem most usually affects “indoor only” cats because cats that have access to the outdoors via a pet door can slip out at night and satisfy their hunting instincts. But you may have many reasons why you prefer to keep your cat indoors.

Do you play with your cat? You should, playing is fun both for you and your cat and helps increase the bond between the two of you.

If your cat’s night energy is causing you to lose sleep try a play session with your cat shortly before you go to bed, this may just tire out your cat so she or he is not so active.

Involve interactive cat toys, the fishing pole type and the toy mouse on a string variety, roll a ball for your cat to chase. Don’t overdo it the object is not to exhaust your kitty but get rid of excess energy. At first your cat may only be interested in playing for a few minutes, that’s okay try playing a little longer the next night.

The energy that your cat spends playing represents the energy a cat would spend hunting, and at the end of a hunt, a successful one anyway, is a meal. So feed your cat a small meal after the play session. In this way you are recreating your cat’s natural nocturnal habits and it just may mean she or he will be a little less active at night.

Don’t expect this to work instantly, you will need to patiently keep trying, good luck.
